WHAT DOES THE RESIDENCE VISA CONSIST OF?

The residence visa is intended to allow its holder to enter Portugal in order to apply for a residence permit. This visa enables its holder to stay in Portugal for 4 months, in order to apply to the SEF for the respective residence permit. As a rule, the deadline for deciding on the application for a residence visa is 60 days. It should be noted that those who have a residence visa are not yet resident, they are only entitled to apply for a residence permit.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?

With correct compliance with the submission of all mandatory documents in line with the required formats as originally requested by the Portuguese government, the process proceeds smoothly, going from step to step and taking only the minimum time necessary and required in accordance with national laws.

TYPES OF RESIDENCE AUTHORIZATION: TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT

WHAT IS A TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMIT?

The temporary residence permit (ART) is valid for a period of one year, starting from the date of issue of the respective title. It is renewable for successive periods of two years and must be renewed whenever there is a change in the identification elements registered therein.

WHAT IS A PERMANENT RESIDENCE PERMIT?

The permanent residence permit (ARP) has no validity limit, however, it must be renewed every five years or whenever justified, that is, when there are changes in the personal identification elements.

Can I work while waiting for an answer to my request for a residence permit?

Pending the request for a residence permit, for reasons not attributable to the applicant, the holder of the residence visa is not prevented from exercising a professional activity, under the terms permitted by law, in relation to the type of residence permit in question.

What is the validity of the residence permit in Portugal?

The temporary period became 2 years for the first request and 3 years for the renewal.
The permanent card does not have an expiration date, but every five years, the card must be renewed and, in this case, the holder is exempt from delivering additional documents to the SEF. If there are changes in the data of the holder, it is also necessary to update the document.
