WHAT DOES PORTUGUESE NATIONALITY CONSIST OF?

Nationality establishes to which country a person's rights and duties are linked. And it can change throughout life. It can be acquired at birth or during life, and it can also be lost. Portuguese law allows a Portuguese person to have other nationalities. Therefore, it is not necessary to give up another nationality to acquire Portuguese nationality. However, the laws of other countries may require that you give up your Portuguese nationality in order to have the nationality of one of these countries.

WHO CAN HAVE PORTUGUESE NATIONALITY?

You can have Portuguese nationality if:

• Born in Portugal with parents of Portuguese nationality

• Born in Portugal with foreign parents

• Born abroad with parents of Portuguese nationality

• Grandchildren of Portuguese descent

• Marry a person of Portuguese nationality

• Legally residing in Portugal for at least 5 years

There are also other cases in which it is possible to acquire or reacquire Portuguese nationality.

How old to have portuguese nationality?

All people who live in Portugal legally for a period of at least 5 years are entitled to apply for Portuguese citizenship by residence time.

The necessary documents are about to expire, or my age group will change soon. Does it make a difference?

Yes, it makes a difference. The documents must be valid when the application is entered into the systems related to the application in question, and not just on the date the application is formulated. The same goes for the age group of the applicant.
